The Queers Destroy Science Fiction! Kickstarter campaign will run from January 15 – February 15. Our two biggest stretch goals are the same as last year: If we receive enough pledges, we’ll not only publish Queers Destroy Science Fiction!, we’ll also publish Queers Destroy Fantasy! and Queers Destroy Horror! special issues as well. If we raise just $5000, we’ll be able to make the special issue a special double-sized issue, and if we raise even more than that, we have a couple of really excellent stretch goals lined up as well. We’ll publish the issue whether the campaign is successful or not, but the campaign will determine how big and awesome we make the issue. Thus, this year’s anniversary issue will be Queers Destroy Science Fiction!, guest edited by Seanan McGuire.Īs with Women Destroy Science Fiction!, we’ll be launching a Kickstarter campaign in support of Queers Destroy Science Fiction!. Never ones to rest on our laurels, we thought it best to continue with that fine tradition and engage in a little more destructive behavior. Last year, we asked women to destroy science fiction, and they did - spectacularly - in Lightspeed’s crowdfunded, all-women special issue, Women Destroy Science Fiction!. This month marks the start of our next big project. Welcome to issue twenty-eight of Nightmare!

In this well-constructed world, an ancient mythology forms the basis for a practice in which husbands have two wives each: Primeras are quick-witted and emotionally restrained while Segundas are brave and passionate. Born on the wrong side of the wall without legal papers, 17-year-old brown-skinned Daniela “Dani” Vargas graduates after 5 years of diligent training at an elite finishing school to join the powerful Garcia family as their son’s Primera. On the other, desperation.” Clear parallels to Mexico in imagery and themes abound. Power, truth, and lies intertwine dangerously in Mejia’s debut novel about oppression and resistance with a cunning Latinx teenage heroine. 5/21/2023 0 Comments The deficit myth stephanie keltonWhat is the best way to balance the risk of inflation against the benefits of a society that is more broadly prosperous, safer, cleaner, and secure? Rather than asking the self-defeating question of how to pay for the crucial improvements our society needs, Kelton guides us to ask: which deficits actually matter? Everything that we've been led to believe about deficits and the role of money and government spending in the economy is wrong, especially the fear that deficits will endanger our long-term prosperity. Stephanie Kelton shows how misguided this question really is by using the bold ideas of modern monetary theory (MMT), the radically different approach to using our resources to maximize our potential as a society. Supporting the economy, paying for healthcare, creating new jobs, preventing the a climate apocalypse - vital challenges which inevitably raise the question: how can we pay for it? That meant Rosen learning the core repertoire from Bach to Brahms pretty well by heart, and it was that lifelong sensuous contact with the great canonical works, so that they were felt under the fingers as well as analysed by the mind, that was the key to making Rosen the great critic that he would later become. Rosenthal, a pupil of Liszt, had gone to the US after the Anschluss joining Austria to Germany, and he – together with his wife, a notable teacher who continued to guide Rosen into his 20s – impressed on him the necessity to acquire a wide musical culture rather than focusing narrowly on a few works. However, by the time he was 11, his playing of Beethoven impressed the great Moriz Rosenthal sufficiently for him to take Rosen on as a pupil. Although Rosen, born in Manhattan, New York, to an architect father and a mother who played the piano, started lessons on the instrument at the age of three, and enrolled at the Juilliard school when he was seven, he was no child prodigy. Such all-round brilliance is not acquired quickly. Translations are expensive and setting aside the time for the research is also expensive. But the reason we’re running the StoryBundle is to set our sights even farther afield, with the monies we receive going into research into fantasy from India and Pakistan, as well as continuing to explore the untranslated work of Latin America, among other regions. In The Best of Spanish Steampunk you’ll also find work from Venezuela, Spain, and Chile, among others. and Australia, but also from Norway, Germany, and Finland-not to mention my new anthology, The Bestiary (here’s a link to a fun excerpt over at Tor.com: ), which in addition to work from Cat Valente and China Miéville features work from Serbia, the Philippines, Iran, Sweden, and elsewhere. As someone who unfortunately only reads in English, I want to make sure my creative world is as cosmopolitan and modern as possible, and sometimes translations are the only way to have a more complete view of world fiction. So in addition to fiction in English from overseas, it’s important to promote and fund translations. Everywhere, too, this impulse or way of thinking about the world is different - sometimes in subtle ways, sometimes in vastly different ways. One thing about fantastical fiction that I like is it’s a universal condition - you find examples from all over the world of writers expressing themselves through the fantastical because sometimes there’s no other way to get across a unique idea or perspective. 5/20/2023 0 Comments The graveyard apartmentThe psychological horror builds moment after moment, scene after scene, culminating with a conclusion that will make you think twice before ever going into a basement again. As strange and terrifying occurrences begin to pile up, people in the building start to move out one by one, until the young family is left alone with someone. This tale of a young married couple who harbor a dark secret is packed with dread and terror, as they and their daughter move into a brand new apartment building built next to a graveyard. Originally published in Japan in 1986, Koike’s novel is the suspenseful tale of a young family that believes it has found the perfect home to grow into, only to realize that the apartment’s idyllic setting harbors the specter of evil and that the longer they stay, the more trapped they become. Known in particular for her hybrid works that blend these styles with elements of romance, The Graveyard Apartment is arguably Koike’s masterpiece. There are two kinds of syllabic quantity - long and short (defined in the next section). Quantity is the amount of time taken to pronounce a syllable. The Quantitative Basis of Latin poetryĢLatin poetry depends for its rhythm on quantity rather than accent. What follows is a quick overview in the basic principles of hexametric verse. His lines flow like those of no other poet - and he is therefore an ideal author for learning how to read and to appreciate Latin hexameters. 1One of the great pleasures of reading Ovid’s Metamorphoses is his verse-craft. 5/20/2023 0 Comments Homebound by lydia hope‘Human caregiver for alien experimentation victim’ is its own subgenre of SF romance, but Homebound’s prison setting makes it stand out. This is a book with writing issues carried by plot and character, but one that SF romance fans will find worth a read. But as Simon gets better, other things, including Gemma’s living situation and working conditions, get worse. Amidst so much misery, Gemma finds meaning in treating him with dignity, and under her care, he starts to make a recovery. A surprise reassignment to the third floor, where the alien prisoners are housed, leads to her encounter with Simon in cell 35 – a filth-encrusted, unspeaking, desiccated male on the verge of death. In The City, an urban ruin that reads like a Dickensian slum, Gemma works for a pittance scrubbing prison cells. Science Fiction romances tend to battle sequences and spaceships, but Homebound by Lydia Hope is set on a dystopian Earth. |
