We are Olu in the void of unanswerable questions we are Kweku, arrested, in a world stopped, on the threshold between sunrise and death we are Fola, feeling death’s interruptive force with our empathic flesh we are many. Disequilibrium, vertiginous tumbling in events, words, silences, and logics pregnant with the secret of some illegible, elegant design, or the undecipherable hieroglyphics of some causality-we begin in the dislocation of this “here,” pensively stirring soymilk into liquid awakening, lost. We begin with death fugitive to all reckoning, as we always must. “Kweku dies”-this is “our” entry into Taiye Selasi’s Ghana Must Go, and “we,” like Kweku’s children and their mother Fola, must come together, attempt to reconcile this irreconcilable opening. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 'Friends Without Benefits' is book #2 in the Knitting in the City series. After all, that ‘album’ was a part of over 20 (and counting) recreations by fans and other artists (including Wilson himself). The latter is probably one of the biggest legends/myths in modern music. Part of those is focused on the band’s original mastermind and songwriter Brian Wilson, and his both released and originally unreleased masterpieces Pet Sounds and Smile. And the range is practically infinite – from gossip articles and obituaries to voluminous books and academic studies. I wrote a review for Book 2 of the Expeditionary Force that basically said it was terrible, and that I hoped Book 3 would be better. I just finished the first book of the Fear the Sky saga which is a kind of similar story line (minus the space travel) but I enjoyed that book much more and recommend it. ![]() I really like the story I just wish there was as much action as there is talking/arguing. instead the whole book seemed to come to a disappointing end and a cliff hanger that doesn't really entice me to want to listen further. ![]() it's makes you want to scream get to the point several times I was really hoping the author would reach a point of the elders/Skippy making some headway. still way too much Skippy and Joe arguing about predictable crap that could be reduced quite a bit so the author could add more to the story. I did enjoy how the book jumped to different perspectives of characters and even alien races however, I feel as though it was just filler for very mild plot influences. Because of this I was fairly hesitant to listen to the third but I really wanted to know what happens and unfortunately it is quite similar to the second book. The second was a bit too much arguing between Joe and Skippy and what seemed (in my opinion) to be a lot of added filler that did very little for the story. I absolutely loved the first book and immediately bought the second because of it. ![]() |
